Communication is so easy that even babies know how to communicate and get what they want. Or is it? Often leaders have a great vision, but they don't know how to speak effectively -- how to communicate so that employees own their strategies and translate them into results. But the communication failure goes both ways. Imagine an organization hierarchy with seven levels, where each level reports 50% of what they know to the next higher level. The boss ends up knowing less than 2% of what is going on. They can only pray that it's the right 2%. Many organizations, from DaimlerChrysler to the FBI to the Church to Enron , miss out on vital intelligence from customers and employees because their leaders are poor listeners. Let Dr. Zweifel show you how to maximize your capacity for breakthrough performance -- simply by the way you speak and listen. Learn how to:

Praise for Communicate or Die

"This book deserves a broad audience. Everybody should read this book. In our businesses and our lives we all have communication failures that could easily be prevented with a little skill; but we are blind in the area. For example, I noticed in the "Business of Listening" section that listening is tough for me as a broadcaster. There are simple things in this 80-page book for each of us - stories, tips and labs - that will greatly raise the effectiveness of our communication. Read this book - it's going to cost you next to nothing to read. You can substitute one evening of entertainment and make a difference in your life and work for years to come."
Ali Velshi, Anchor, CNNfn

"In the 21st century, perhaps more than ever before, US soldiers need not only technical and fighting capability, but also leadership skills. The chief medium of leaders is communication. Zweifel's powerful yet simple principles, practices and tools enable leaders to use a free commodity - language - to produce breakthrough results."
Col. Joseph LeBoeuf, Head, Leadership Program, US Military Academy, West Point

"This is the sort of book I love. Stimulating, inspirational, full of ideas you can use. I particularly like the weighting towards the importance of listening. It's the yin that most yang books on communication forget. Listening to understand others is one of the most empowering gifts we can offer. Enrich your own communication by reading this book."
Peter Thompson. Broadcaster and author of Persuading Aristotle. Director, Centre for Leadership, Australia.

"This book is a bit like a "Communication for Dummies." What I love about the book is that you can put it down and then pick it up again where you left off, without losing the thread. That is great for busy executives. The stories and lessons are directly applicable to my work with direct reports, peers, and superiors. These tools will allow us to cut out a lot of unnecessary chatter from our communications. I learned a lot from this book."
Steve Miley, Executive Vice President Sales, Cemex

"This is the first business book I have seen that emphasizes the importance of listening for producing results. Leaders must appreciate the other person's yearning to be understood. The book offers fascinating stories I had never heard in my five decades in the financial community, and that I could immediately relate my own experiences to. Communication is free, and it can transform reality. An outstanding, well-researched and extremely interesting book."
Richard Murray, Vice Chairman, LaProv Corporation

"I keep this book with me at all times, I carry it in my briefcase, because you never know when you might need it to inspire a colleague, or brush up on your speaking and listening skills. An excellent book."
Michael Gentz, General Manager, ConocoPhillips Germany

"I am a huge believer in Communicate or Die. When leaders build communication into day-to-day life, the difference in team performance is amazing. When people speak - and listen - effectively, they get better information, better strategic intelligence, and better results. Zweifel's short book is absolutely essential for you and your people if you want tight championship teams."
Steve Baird, Managing Director, Human Resources, UBS Warburg

Reader Reviews

Communicate or Die
"What I was left with after reading this book is that virtually any problem can be solved through communication -- both speaking and listening. Given the kinds of problems we are facing today, Communicate or Die should be required reading for anyone in a position of leadership. We live in a world where everyone has so much to say, but how much of what is said and written is truly productive and makes a difference? And who is listening? Read this book."
Deborah Gouge (from Amazon.com, November 8, 2003)

Read Communicate or Die!
"So simple it's radical! In easy but elegant prose, Dr. Zweifel maps out an effective practice to re-engage the often forgotten but most fundamental of all human tools: communication. His timely and practical advice on active listening and effective speaking can benefit everyone no matter what the endeavor. From personal relationships, dealing with a boss, or leading a multinational corporation, this book is a must for any citizen of the modern world."
ethane (from Amazon.com, November 6, 2003)

Clients give rave reviews
"We purchased 165 copies of this book as our Holiday gift for clients (family and firends get them also!)at the end of 2003. We have been meeting with most of these clients since then and many more have read and are working with the listening skills in this book. More so than most books we have purchased for them to read in hte past! It is a quick read with practical recommendations on improving skills coupled with stories of why speaking, and more importantly, great listening skills are cirtical for leaders ... leaders in business, community leaders and in leaders in familes ... actually for effective leadership in each of our own lives. It applies to everyone!"
Suzanne Frindt (from Amazon.com, March 29, 2004)

The heart of the matter of communication
"I highly recommend Thomas Zweifel's book Communicate or Die as it gets to the heart of the matter regarding one key area that is missing in organizations. The truth is you will either go through life with a commitment to master communication or go through life at the effect of others mastery of communication. Thomas has mastery and is generous enough to share it with us in a way that is easy to get and simple to apply."
Robert Shereck, Partner, Legacy Transformational Consulting LLC (from Amazon.com, March 16, 2004)

Get The Help You Don't Yet Know You NEED
"There are very few self-help books that I am at all interested in. Communicate or Die, as I quickly realised, is not a self help book, but a book that makes you want to help yourself through it's practicle association with today's business and negotions. This is definitely a must read for anyone that is interested in beaing a leader, and more importantly, a good leader who is foremost a good listener and communicator. I did not put this book down until I was done and I think that many who begin to read it will experience the same thrill. Enjoy."
Akiel Catwell (from Amazon.com, March 9, 2004)

Communicate or Die
"This excellent book teaches you how not to take too much for granted and that effective communication makes all the difference. It's good to keep the book close at hand, to remind you, that what you assume might be obvious in this domain, in fact is well worth thinking about. Thank you Thomas D.Zweifel."
Olivia Badrutt, Advertising Executive (from Amazon.com, February 27, 2004)

Culture of communication
"In my work as a doctor and hospital manager, I use both books 'Communicate or Die' and 'Culture Clash' in my interactions with colleagues. (Being a radiologist in nuclear medicine, I have only 5 minutes per patient.) In many hospitals, a highly hierarchical structure often prohibits a culture of constructive criticism among colleagues. But I was able to use the tools and tips from both books very well -- in particular for my work as a team-leader of mostly younger colleagues, focused on producing specific research results. For example, I learned to listen between the lines, check my own assumptions, and save weeks of otherwise wasted research -- and time is money. Both books emphasize the importance of communication for doing business. But anyone who must communicate for results will improve communication abilities when learning these lessons. The importance of listening instead of speaking and the use of active listening as a tool for getting results are clearly outlined. Both books are written by someone who learned his lessons by trial and error. Thomas D. Zweifel does not get lost in communication theories and does not use scientific terminology. He gives real-life examples for situations where communication failed. The books also provide good examples for how to reveal and solve communication problems. The lessons, labs, and the 'dos and taboos' give good input for daily exercise as long as the reader has the will to improve his or her communication abilities."
Gerhard Goerres, MD, Division of Nuclear Medicine, University Hospital, Zurich (from Amazon.com, February 25, 2004)

Marchon Alexandre (from Amazon.com, January 29, 2004)

A superb leadership manual
"As the head of a nonprofit entertainment company in Manhattan, I heartily recommend this concise and inspired work. Too often communication snafus undo months or even years of planning. An institution's growth cannot sustain oversight of this nature. Zweifel's book came to my attention at a crucial transition point for my company, when reallocation of staffing duties, and a new 5-year plan was being put into place. MOST of the book's insights were directly helpful to this phase of rebuilding. I cannot recommend it highly enough."
D. Fishelson (from Amazon.com, January 16, 2004)

Focus on Listening
"In Communicate or Die, Thomas Zweifel cuts right to the heart of the matter using clear language and illustrations (stories, pictures, tips) that provide the reader with practical, essential communication tools. The chapter on listening based on his "Matterhorn of Masterful Listening" states that "your results increase exponentially with the quality of your listening". I doubt that most of us think in terms of the "quality" of our listening - and the chapter explicity describes what this means and how to achieve it in communication. Mr. Zweifel does not pretend that improved communication will be easy - the "Troubleshooting Manual" makes this very clear! But he brings a sense of love and humor to the rigorous practices he advocates that made me as a reader WANT to participate in the process - for myself personally and professionally, and in the best interests of humanity. That is a large result for a 99 page text!"
Cheryl Ramette (from Amazon.com, January 5, 2004)

Excellent Insights
"Great book, great insights. Truly a must read for those interested in improving their communication skills. Especially one's listening skills."
Reza and Eva (from Amazon.com, November 16, 2003)

Communication is the key for success
"Communicate or Die challenges to the reader to rethink how he or she communicates ideas, motivates colleagues and addresses problems. The reader relates to the labs and examples Dr. Zweifel presents. It provokes new thoughts of how to confront situations that may have plagued your ability to successfuly move through a situation either positive or negative. A must read."
Daniel Soja (from Amazon.com, November 5, 2003)

Communicate of Die
"Excellent summary of the importance now attached to communication in the business world. I really like the concise structure of the book...it is something all business people could use on a daily basis!"
Jim Jamison (from Amazon.com, October 6, 2003)

Communication is Critical!
"In this book, Dr. Zweifel makes a clear case for communication as critical to surviving and thriving. What makes this book unique is the emphasis on listening as the foundation for successful communication. By using pertinent examples of both successful and unsuccessful communication and laboratory/workshop techniques the author makes a lasting contribtion to the art and science of communication. You'll enjoy climbing the Matterhorn!"
Lenore Traband (from Amazon.com, August 25, 2003)

An easy and compelling guide to better global communication
"Mr. Zweifel has written such an easy book to read and to follow. For anyone who is considering extensive global travel or who is already a global executive, this book has something for everyone. Unlike other books I've read in this area his writing style allowed me to pick it up over an over again- Great work!"
A reader from Boston (from Amazon.com, February 27, 2003)

Communicate or Die
"Communicate or Die is a fascinating book. It's well written with concepts that are easily interpreted and understandood by any reader. Zweifel brings to light some of key elements that are usually overlooked and yet crucial to creating harmony and balance in human's daily life. No matter where we all come from, such things like communication, listening, are in fact, what allows us to become members of a civilized society, gives the opportunity to understand the dynamics of our human differences. The truth is, Communication, whether be silent or verbal, or whether be just listening(for I find listening to be also a way of communicating), is indeed, a perfect way to build, bridge, and even more than anything, a weapon to problem-solving, as it is clearly presented in "Communicate or Die". Let me commend Thomas Zweifel for an incredible work in presenting the essence and the benefit of having "Listening Skills". The illustrations provided in this particular chapter are such an important recipe in terms of showing the advantages of using "Listening skills" as a way to enrich oneself and also making one an incredible leader. For instance, the example of Operah Winfred is particularly a very good one because it touches on the reality of human senses and shows what it means to be a good listener."
Anselme Sadiki (from Amazon.com, October 27, 2002)

Simple Truths
"This book is great for anyone generally concerned with making themselves a better leader and communicator. Whether you're successful or challenged, it's a good guide and reminder of the importance of clear, productive communication. Zweifel also provides some useful strategies on achieving your goals and inspiring others to join in your vision. It's a light, enjoyable read with simple prose, funny commentary and stories and insightful techniques to challenge yourself not to just be a leader but to be an outstanding leader."
