Praise
for Culture Clash
"As Japan's
former chief diplomat, I have seen time and time again how small cross-cultural
misunderstandings can spin out of control. We live in dangerous and turbulent
times in international affairs, and we must do everything in our power to bridge
cultural differences. Thomas Zweifel's book helps us do exactly that. It is
an important and timely book, and it should be read by all those who are working
not only to prevent culture clash, but for our common future as humanity."
Hon. Koji Kakizawa, Member, House of Representatives, Japan; former Foreign
Minister, Japan; former Member, Global Board of Directors, The Hunger Project
"Thomas Zweifel wrote a great book. Churchill used to say: "the higher
the ape climbs, the more you see of his behind." The more today's managers
work globally, the more they expose themselves to risks and hazards. This book
offers essential principles and tips for senior managers who must circumnavigate
the treacherous cliffs of other cultures. The graphic examples, impactful statistics
and entertaining style make it an easy read. I wish I had had access to Zweifel's
tools 35 years ago when I was starting out."
Werner Brandmayr, President and Managing Director, Conoco Continental Holding
GmbH
"A great read - and you end up feeling smarter as a result of it. Part
of the charm of being American is being overbearing and bullish, but sometimes
we don't realize the effect our behavior has on other cultures. Absolutely required
reading for leaders who manage across cultures."
Ali Velshi, Anchor, CNNfn
"When it comes to cultural differences, most of us don't even know what
we don't even know. Culture Clash not only reminds us of our blindness, but
also offers a cure. Pick it up, read it, and see what we're missing!"
Scott A. Snook, Associate Professor, Harvard Business School
"The US Army has made it a top priority to train its cadets not only as
competent soldiers, but also as skillful diplomats to represent our country
around the world. We use Culture Clash in our advanced leadership course. It
is a great tool in building the skills the Army needs in the 21st century."
Col. Joseph LeBoeuf, Head, Leadership Program, US Military Academy at West
Point
"Culture Clash is worth real money for global companies. The productivity
of large corporations is directly linked to culture - the more senior you are,
the more you have got to pay attention to cross-cultural roadblocks. If you
want to build or manage a global high-performance team, read this book and give
it to everyone around you."
Steve Baird, Managing Director, Human Resources, UBS Warburg
"I am a big-time believer in building global competency, and have personally
been through a wide range of problems you face in a cross-cultural environment.
Global competency requires the careful selection and preparation of talent,
but also constant learning since the environment changes all the time. Culture
Clash is a great introduction for global executives to the many dimensions you
need to play successfully in the global arena."
Hal Burlingame, former Executive Vice President, AT&T, and currently
Senior Executive Advisor, AT&T Wireless
"Culture Clash: Managing the Global High-performance Team is a fascinating
and clearly written book that will greatly empower the managers of any global
corporation or team. Thomas Zweifel's many years of experience working effectively
in cultures all over the world has given him an uncanny and insightful access
to the real and profound keys to success working cross-culturally, where a minefield
of mistakes are often waiting to happen. His book is clear, concise and gets
right down to the best nuggets available on this topic and he shares his insight
with both wit and wisdom. A brilliant piece of work and highly relevant to today's
global culture."
Lynne Twist, President of The Turning Tide Coalition and author of "The
Soul of Money"
"...should be required reading for anyone who travels, or just for dealing
with people of different cultures on our own home turf."
Roseanne Schnoll, PhD, RD, CDN, Associate Professor, Department of Health
and Nutrition Sciences, Brooklyn College of CUNY
Reader Reviews
A great book
"I have been in the business of cross-border M&As for a long time.
This would be great reading for our clients. For somebody who didn't grow up
with this at the dining table, it's an excellent way of getting up to speed
quickly. It picks out the parts of the cross-cultural puzzle and makes them
understandable and usable. The section on preventing things from going wrong
is an excellent analysis of elements that go into the cross-cultural melting
pot. If you follow these prescriptions, you have an instant leg up on the competition.
This is a great book."
John Adams, President, Adams & Royer, Inc. (from Amazon.com, October
18, 2002)
A great book, a useful tool.
"I really found this book is doing a excellent job in combing the subtle
threads of cultural differences hence the clashes in nowsdays international
settings. What I am more deeply impressed is that the book not only provides
a tool for people in business, political sector in understanding the generally
underestimated factor of culture clash in real world communication, but how
to successfully manage the various problems arousing from this issue as well.
Plus, the language itself in the book is amazingly vivid."
Wang Yao, New York (from Amazon.com, November 7, 2002)

interested or involved in cultural issues in international environment, i strongly
recommend to you this book, writen in a clear, relevant and even funny style!"

Culture and communication
"In my work as a doctor and hospital manager, I use both books 'Communicate
or Die' and 'Culture Clash' in my interactions with colleagues. (Being a radiologist
in nuclear medicine, I have only 5 minutes per patient.) In many hospitals,
a highly hierarchical structure often prohibits a culture of constructive criticism
among colleagues. But I was able to use the tools and tips from both books very
well -- in particular for my work as a team-leader of mostly younger colleagues,
focused on producing specific research results. For example, I learned to listen
between the lines, check my own assumptions, and save weeks of otherwise wasted
research -- and time is money. Both books emphasize the importance of communication
for doing business. But anyone who must communicate for results will improve
communication abilities when learning these lessons. The importance of listening
instead of speaking and the use of active listening as a tool for getting results
are clearly outlined. Both books are written by someone who learned his lessons
by trial and error. Thomas D. Zweifel does not get lost in communication theories
and does not use scientific terminology. He gives real-life examples for situations
where communication failed. The books also provide good examples for how to
reveal and solve communication problems. The lessons, labs, and the 'dos and
taboos' give good input for daily exercise as long as the reader has the will
to improve his or her communication abilities."
Gerhard W. Goerres, MD, Division of Nuclear Medicine, University Hospital,
Zurich (from Amazon.com, February 25, 2004)
Very good overview
"Thomas Zweifel takes us in the depths of management in regard to diverse
cultural environments and multicultural interaction. It is a very pleasant book
to read with a lot of practical and first-hand examples (with working assignments
in Europe, India and Japan which gives a broad sprectrum of differences in culture).
Beeing aware of cultural differences, having a good background knowledge of
the culture you embrace and invest into, are critical factors in order to succeed.
"Culture Clash" is a great base for any manager involved in projects
with multi-cultural workforce or expatriates with senior management role where
culture dimensions cannot be ignored."
Alain Sauberli (from Amazon.com, November 7, 2003)
Culture Clash
"Having spent too many years traveling across Europe I can really relate
to the key points in this excellent book! Sadly too many companies still believe
they can manage International relationships without taking the time to understand
the local culture...they find out "the hard way!!" They should make
this book compulsory reading for all executives who have any international responsibility
within their job description."
Jim Jamison (from Amazon.com, October 6, 2003)
A Must Read for Global Leaders
"The author gives excellent guidelines for living in the new global society.
He shares his firsthand experience of and respect and appreciation for different
cultures in a way that can be easily accessed. He prepares us for the shift
from national to global citizenship that seems to have happened both subtly
and suddenly. With this book, both executives and employees of multi-national
corporations as well as ordinary folks can help dispel the myth of the 'Ugly
American'."
Lenore Traband (from Amazon.com, August 25, 2003)
A Must Read for Multi-Cultural Understanding
"For people who have opportunities to work globally, this book is an important
tool. Thomas Zweifel gives an insightful perspective on why some multi-cultural
endeavors succeed and why others fail. His book provides anecdotes, tools and
exercises to help develop the skills necessary to work globally. Now more than
ever, these skills are vital to economic growth as well as diplomatic relations
between countries."
Lisa A. Gutch (from Amazon.com, July 23, 2003)

Amazing, Direct and Funny
"This is a great book. It treats an often underestimated subject in a simple
yet compiling way. It is an easy too read, direct to the point and well documented
piece. The jokes and funny anecdotes make the points go across in a very creative

not make when working in another culture."
Carlos E. Gomez (from Amazon.com, March 1, 2003)

It Communicates!
"This is the sort of book I love. Stimulating, inspirational, full of ideas
you can use. I particularly like the weighting towards the importance of listening.
It's the yin that most yang books on communication forget. Listening to understand
others is one of the most empowering gifts we can offer. Enrich your own communication
by reading this book."
